Oral Comprehension
This assessment was found on McNary Heights Elementary Schools website. It is a formal assessment for 5th grade students. The assessment measures how well the student can fluently read a passage without struggling over a certain amount of words. The assessment is set up so that it is timed for a minute, after a minute the teacher will note where the student reached in the passage. This assessment should be given individually so students do not feel the need to race with one another to complete it in a certain amount of time.

This assessment comes from the state of Florida's Department of Education. Although it is a formal assessment it can be used informally in your classrooms to help prep students on oral comprehension. There are assessments for students in grades first through fifth, the goal is to see how fluently the student can read aloud within a certain amount of time. The test should take no more than a minute to complete for each reading passage. All test should be given individually to students so the teacher can monitor the students progress.

Silent Reading
This assessment is an informal reading assessment that was created by Dr. Joyce Jennings. It targets students in grades pre-primer through 8th grade. The assessment measures whether students can understand a word in isolation and in context of the reading passage. It would take about a minute for students to individually complete the assessment. This assessment also works for a dual purpose and can be used for oral comprehension as well.
